a cedar rapids woman vows to never use an h-t-c phone again. patricia dampier spent friday afternoon in the hospital after her phone ruptured in her home. police and firefighters say it appears the battery exploded. kcrg t-v nine's jordee kalk joins us in studio. jordee, did dampier have any warning before the phone exploded? patricia never expected this to happen. she bought her h-t-c 1 phone about phone, or did any other damage to it. but as you can see here, this phone will never be used again. nat: 50:46, "i was laying right here on the bed, i was laying crossways." patricia dampier was in the middle of an afternoon nap when her mom called. "when i tried to answer the phone it was froze."she set the phone on her bed. a few seconds later she noticed... "41:05, "white smoke"in shock,

her bed. instead it landed near the foot of th bed... and began singeing the sheets and mattress. nat: 52:26, "it was burning down "all i hear is screaming, she was just screaming."pat ricia's cousin laniece rushed to help. "the window is open, the bed is smoking, the whole room is smoky, its like a cocktail bomb went off."patricia says she handed laniece a shoe. the two then worked to stop the smoldering. "the phone starting sparking so when she knocked the phone off the bed it was smoking and "i put the towel over the phone to try to pick the phone up but it was still really hot so i left it there and then it started to burn the ground.just a minute later laniece says she was able to grab the phone. she then took patricia outside. nat, 51:10, "she came in and rescued me." patricia, who's also 7 months pregnant went to the hospital for breathing difficulties. "my baby had to get watched over and monitored."fire crews responded once the women were out of their home. to make sure nothing else was at risk of burning. patricia : 44:23, "i'm just glad i woke up and i'm still alive

for now, patricia is using a flip phone. she hopes to get h-t-c to pay for a new phone with a differnt company. i spoke to a h-t-c- representative about this case. he told me the consumer customer care division is investigating patricia's claim. reporting live in studio, jordee kalk, kcrg tv9 news. in a kcrg t-v nine update tonight... the linn county sheriff's office says shooting this afternoon resulted from a fight over deputies arrived at palo auto salvage on old ferry road around 4:45 this afternoon, they found 45 year old melvin roberts with a gunshot wound in the leg. the sheriff's office says another man found roberts trespassing, and shot him when an argument got heated. they expect roberts to be okay. the deputies eventually arrested him on an outstanding warrant. the man who shot him does

privatized medicaid, as the health policy oversight committee held its first meeting since the transition. three private insurance companies, called m-c-o's, took over in april. lawmakers spent much of the four hour meeting reviewing a report on the first months of the new system. state overseers said m-c-o's are meeting obligated benchmarks and many payment issues are being worked out. they also reported iowa has saved millions of dollars. whi seemed satisfied with the results, democrats weren't buying it. senator amanda ragan told us many care providers and users are still struggling. she said democrats will likely push for new a new medicaid oversight bill in the next session. " we would hope that we could come together and maybe make some kinds of corrections at least " " we are making good headway. but it takes some time. this is a very complex delivery system." governor terry branstad spearheaded the move saying it would millions of dollars and cut down on medicaid fraud, abuse

transition rushed and say care providers and iowa's 560-thousand medicaid users are suffering, dealing with cut coverage, delayed payments and slow service. adventureland faces a 45 hundred dollar fine for the death of a worker. the iowa occupational safety and health administration levied the fine for the death of steve booher on june seventh. he was working on the raging river ride when it started unexpectedly while he was adventureland has 15 days to contest the osha findings. today the clayton county supervisors approved rezoning some land for a proposed sand mine. the pattison sand company wanted the change for more than 700 acres of land, giving it the option to mine the property in the future. today the supervisors passed the second and third readings of the rezoning, making the decision final. it changed from agricultural to heavy

requiring the mining to be underground. pattison has to implement a well monitoring program... and it has to pay for any well damage from the mining. pattison still needs a conditional use permit from the clayton county board of adjustment. today dakota access, which is building the bakken oil pipeline, asked a federal judge in des moines to issue a restraining order against two protest groups and their leaders. it's against iowa citizens for community improve and bold iowa. the groups are planning acts of civil disobedience along the pipeline route, which includes 18 counties in iowa. this is video of protestors in north dakota last week. dakota access says protestors have burned some of their equipment, causing 3 million dollars in property damage. protestors released a statement, saying big oil does not get to restrict their freedom of speech while protecting property rights and water. today governor terry branstad said if protestors try to stop construction of the

with them. branstad made the comments today while at an event in pella. the governor says troopers would make sure construction workers stay safe. the nearly 12 hundred mile pipeline would send oil from north dakota to illinois. branstad says protestors should accept the iowa utility board's approval of the project. while pokemon hunting continues to be popular, people in dyersville are on a different kind of social scavenger hunt. kcrg t-v nine's katie wiedemann has kids and adults out on the prowl. just after school let out on a steamy summer afternoon, these dyersville kids are putting their creative geniuses to work. they're painting pictures on whatever rocks then can find. then taking the rocks back outside and hiding them all over dyersville. "basically it gets you outside in nature, when most time people are on their phones inside. " then the search is on. looking for the painted rocks other people have hidden

yeah hours. " "some rocks are hard to find, while others, like this are just hiding in plain sight. once you find them, you take a picture with it and post it on facebook. " "and then you post it on facebook. and then you hide it again or you keep it. " heidi huisman started dyersville rocks and created the facebook group for rock hunters. "it's been about three weeks and we're already over 700 people. " it's a game of hide and seek that seems to have captivated the community. one rock at a rock time. purpose than to be creative and have fun. and it's all because of popular demand. people got a first look today

the numbers. with the clouds hiding the real star of the show, cipco showed off its new urbana solar site monday. these 3500 panels of power will light up more than 100 homes during the daytime for a year. "so it doesn't use any fossil fuels like coal or air, it has no waste byproducts, so the solar panels absorb the sun and create electricity." "contractors have already started putting on some of the panels. construction st june, and they hope to have this 7 acre site up and running by mid october." "our membership wants clean electricity, and we want to provide that." but going green won't cost extra green. "from a standpoint, the only way that they would receive a different price point on their bill, or a lower energy cost potential could be if they installed solar energy themselves." this is the first of five energy sites cipco will be putting up in iowa. officials are calling it the wave of the

gigawatts of solar energy that were produced, and this year it is going to be 14.5 " the panels work best in the bright sunlight. but even on cloudy days like this one, these panels are ready to shine. in urbana phil reed kcrg tv9 news solar sites are also being built in wilton, pella, osceola and marshalltown . those will be done in december. the rush is on to transform kinnick stadium back weekend's concert. today workers removed the stage and most of the equipment that they had installed for the concert. but the whole tear down could last till wednesday. the hawkeyes open their home football season at kinnick on saturday. holding a concert so close to the first game created a lot of work, but they're not expecting any issues. and in some ways the concert helped everyone get ready for the start of the season. a drone commercially needed a pilot's license. that's not the case anymore. the federal aviation administration now says people must pass an aeronautical exam. drones have to be less then 55 pounds and can't fly higher than 400 feet. government officials say they see the potential for commercial use drones. sot " over the next ten years, commercial, unmanned aircraft systems could gene $82 billion for the u.s. economy, and by 2025, could be supporting as many as 100,000 new jobs.
